Algae are a diverse group that includes seaweeds and microscopic algae. Nori, wakame and kombu have long been eaten in many cultures, while microalgae such as spirulina and chlorella are sold as ingredients or supplements. They may contribute useful nutrients and new food products, but composition and safety vary widely.
What nutrients do algae provide?
Depending on species and processing, edible algae may contain fibre, protein, iodine, iron and other minerals. Some microalgae oils provide the omega-3 fatty acid DHA and can offer an alternative to fish-derived oils. Nutrient content is not consistent: species, season, growing water, harvesting and processing all matter.
Iodine: useful but potentially excessive
The thyroid needs iodine to make hormones. Some brown seaweeds, especially kelp and kombu, can contain extremely high and variable amounts. Regular excess intake can disturb thyroid function.

Dried spirulina can contain substantial protein by weight, but normal serving sizes are small. It is not a complete solution to protein needs. Seaweed can grow without arable land or freshwater irrigation, yet environmental benefit is not automatic: farming location, energy, processing, transport and ecosystem effects all matter.
Who should be cautious?
People with thyroid or kidney conditions, those taking anticoagulants or thyroid medicines, and anyone pregnant or breastfeeding should check suitability before using concentrated algae supplements. Products can also cause digestive symptoms or allergic reactions.
A practical conclusion
Edible seaweed can be part of a varied diet in sensible portions. The strongest case is as a food ingredient with known identity and composition—not as a detox product or cure.
