This Editorial Policy explains how Healthline aims to create, review, update, and correct health information.
Editorial Principles
- Clarity: Medical terms should be explained in accessible language.
- Accuracy: Health claims should be consistent with reputable evidence and established clinical guidance.
- Safety: Pages should explain when urgent or professional care may be needed and should not provide individual diagnosis.
- Independence: Editorial content should not be changed to satisfy an advertiser or commercial partner.
- Transparency: Important sources, review dates, limitations, and material corrections should be identified where appropriate.
Sources
Priority is given to public health authorities, government health services, recognised medical organisations, clinical guidelines, systematic reviews, and peer-reviewed research. Sources may include organisations such as the World Health Organization, national health agencies, NHS, CDC, NIH and MedlinePlus, and relevant professional bodies.
A source link does not mean that the source organisation endorses Healthline. Where evidence is uncertain, evolving, or conflicting, the wording should reflect that uncertainty.
Medical Review and Updates
Pages are reviewed and updated according to clinical importance, evidence changes, user needs, and identified errors. A “last reviewed” date indicates when a page was checked, but readers should still consult current local guidance and qualified healthcare professionals.
Corrections
Possible factual errors, unclear wording, broken links, and outdated recommendations should be investigated and corrected promptly. Significant corrections may be noted on the affected page when useful to readers.
Use of Automated Tools
Digital or automated tools may assist with research organisation, translation, editing, or readability. They do not replace source checking or appropriate human judgement. Medical claims should be checked against reputable sources before publication.
Conflicts of Interest and Advertising
Material commercial relationships, sponsorships, affiliate links, or conflicts of interest should be disclosed clearly. Advertising, if used, should be distinguishable from editorial content.
